It clocks in at just over two hours, but once it gets going, it doesn’t stop, making it a good watch that addresses important issues worth checking out

Yet there is still a strong and emotionally powerful performance from Karla Sofía Gascón as a ruthlessly violent assassin who undergoes more than one physical transformation in the four or five years this drama covers. Saldana also holds the whole thing together well, delivering a compelling portrayal of a character who has perhaps lost faith in what the system can do to make things better for ordinary people and is therefore more likely to dabble “in the enemy’s tent.” It is peppered with musical numbers. Some of them manage better than others to bring subtlety, love, lust and anger to the proceedings, but we should not be under any illusion that there are great singers here. I found the resolution a little rushed and, frankly, pretty weak, but the whole film sheds a pretty provocative light on attitudes towards gender identification and, just as importantly, the corruption and relatively low value placed on human life in a country where someone is almost always working for someone else.
